Even if Naruto and Sasuke didn’t invent the shonen rivalry trope, their relationship throughout the original Naruto series and Shippuden set a standard that has, at least, inspired several other manga artists. Sasuke may have been introduced merely as Naruto's rival, but his significance to the plot made him more impactful than any other character. As important as Naruto’s growth was to the story, Sasuke’s continued to remind both him and the audience that there would still be one last hurdle to cross even if he became Hokage.
