Starting this week, Dell is offering an Alienware m16 R2 16" RTX 4060 gaming laptop for only $1,299.99 after a $300 instant discount. The GeForce RTX 4060 is a very capable GPU, but if you're looking for something even more powerful, you can upgrade to an RTX 4070 for an extra $300. The "R2" is a second generation model that was released earlier this year; it's lighter and more compact than its predecessor without compromising on performance.
Alienware m16 R2 16" RTX 4060 Gaming Laptop for $1299.99
This particular Alienware m16 R2 laptop features a 16" 2560x1600 QHD+ display, the new 14th gen Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, GeForce RTX 4060 GPU, 16GB of DDR5-5600MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe SSD. The Intel Core Ultra 7 155H is a Meteor Lake CPU with a Turbo Boost clock speed of 4.8GHz with 16 cores, 22 threads, and a 24MB cache. The Core Ultra 7 is the successor to the Intel Core i7 CPU; it offers similar performance while consuming less power, and thus reducing heat and increasing battery life. If you intend to use this laptop as a gaming rig, there's very little reason to upgrade to the Core Ultra 9 because the additional cores have zero benefit in the vast majority of games.
You'll need a decent amount of GPU power to be able to run games smoothly on the display's bumped-up QHD+ resolution. The RTX 4060 sits between the RTX 3070 and the RTX 3070 Ti, so it's definitely no slouch in terms of gaming performance. Some laptop manufacturers throttle the GPU in order to reduce the heat and lower power requirements. Alienware doesn't do that with its m-series laptops. For example, the RTX 4060 in this laptop has a 140W (115W + 25W Dynamic Boost) TGP rating, the maximum power for a 4060 mobile GPU. To compensate, the Alienware m16 employs a robust active cooling system that can dissipate heat more efficiently. It does require a good deal of power (this particular model includes a 240W power brick), but if gaming is your priority, the m16 laptop always performs near the top of the heap.
The new Alienware m16 R2 vs. m16 R1
The Alienware m16 R2 was launched right around CES 2024; it's a lighter and slimmer refresh of last year's m16 R1 laptop. The hump behind the display is no longer there, resulting in a 14% reduction in both dimension and weight. Additionally, the m16 R2 is now equipped with low voltage Intel Meteor Lake CPUs for less power draw. Fortunately, the GPU gets the same amount of power as before, so you still get top-of-the-line gaming performance. Finally, for those of you who don't like disco-light RGB bling, you can now switch to a more subtle white LED backlighting with a press of a button.
