Kingdom Come is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential DC Comics ever published. It's even one of the sources of inspiration behind James Gunn's Superman movie. But how did this iconic story come to be? That's a question that'll be answered in the upcoming documentary film The Legend of Kingdom Come.

With the crowdfunding campaign for The Legend of Kingdom Come live now, IGN can exclusively debut a new clip from the film. Check it out in the video player above or embedded below:

The Legend of Kingdom Come is directed by Remsy Atassi (Bad Animal) and produced by art dealer and comic book creator Sal Abbinanti (whom you might remember from Atomika: God Is Red). The film traces the origins of the comic book series and its lasting impact on superhero pop culture.

In the exclusive clip above, creators Mark Waid and Alex Ross reflect on their partnership and the early genesis of what became Kingdom Come. The film also features interviews with comic book luminaries like Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, The 100's Julie Benson and Shawna Benson, and Batman: The Animated Series' Paul Dini.

The crowdfunding campaign for The Legend of Kingdom Come features a number of different tiers and rewards, ranging from digital copies of the film to signed Blu-rays to art prints and posters to original artwork. Head down to the slideshow gallery below for a closer look at some of the physical items featured in the Kickstarter campaign:

"As I look back on Kingdom Come, and what has become one of the most important works of my career, I find myself getting overcome with emotion," said Ross in a statement. "It was such an exhilarating time for me, one of taking risks and learning through experimentation how to perfect my craft. I am so grateful for all the fans of the comic. With this documentary I hope people can see the joy creating superhero art still brings me and are as excited as I am for the future of visual storytelling."

"What Alex and I created with Kingdom Come remains a high-water mark in my comics career," said Waid. "The process of putting words on paper and seeing those turn into these amazing painted images was an incredible experience that will forever be etched in my mind and I'm excited for fans to get a glimpse into that in this film."

In other DC news, Waid recently let slip that Gunn's Superman apparently features Krypto the Super-Dog.
