In the last decade, the gaming world has seen a farming simulator boom due to the success of indie darling Stardew Valley. Having inspired Stardew Valley, most people would point to the Harvest Moon (or Story of Seasons as it's now known after changing Western publishers) as the true grandfather of farming games. However, there's a less-discussed farming franchise that also has inspired several developers to try their hands at the genre: Rune Factory. Known as Harvest Moon's fantasy- and combat-oriented spinoff series, four main games and two side games came out between 2006 and 2013, winning over many with the magical world and actionized take on the parent series.
