This year's release of The Exorcist: Believer (2023) will mark the 50th anniversary of The Exorcist (1973), one of the most infamous horror movies ever made. The classic original was directed by William Friedkin and adapted from a novel by William Peter Blatty. The movie was so chilling and disturbing when it was released that the home video release was banned in the UK for 11 years and the trailer was banned from theaters in the US. Despite this, it was an enormous commercial success, taking over $400 million at the box office (around $2.4 billion adjusted for inflation). It also holds the extremely rare accolade of being one of the very few horror movies to win at the Oscars, taking home the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for William Peter Blatty, and Best Sound at the 1974 Oscars. It was also nominated for Best Picture, a feat practically unheard of for a horror movie, and only matched by Jaws (1975), The Silence of the Lambs (1991), The Sixth Sense (1999), Black Swan (2010), and Get Out (2017).
