Any genre needs its tropes to truly thrive. Audiences have certain expectations about how narrative arcs will unfold, and what the characters at the core of those stories should be like. DC Comics has certainly leaned into many of its own unique tropes, especially when it comes to its impressive villain roster. But, just because they are iconic and integral to each hero's journey, that doesn't mean they get a free pass when it comes to recycling the same trends of the genre.
