Although science fiction and fantasy are often grouped together as a genre, the two have some very clear differences, but within those differences, the subgenres have many things to teach each other. Take, for example, The Lord of the Rings and the related works of J. R. R. Tolkien. This magical saga full of Dwarves and Elves, kings and wizards has largely defined modern fantasy. On the other hand, Star Wars is rife with spaceships, aliens, and laser weapons. As a franchise, Star Wars has set the standard for science fiction in the 20th century and beyond. Yet, both The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars have stories of mythic proportions, heroes against overwhelming odds, and world-building that sparks the imagination to this very day.
