The newest addition to the Spider-Man mythos is certainly distinguishing himself from his mentor. In Spider-Man #10 (by Dan Slott, Christos Gage, Mark Bagley, John Dell, Andrew Hennessy, Edgard Delgado, VC's Joe Caramagna), Spider-Boy came to Spider-Man's aid during a battle with Electro. Thanks to his over-charged spider-sense, Spider-Man was at the villain's mercy until Spider-Boy intervened. During the fight, the young hero proved he could hold his own, and he revealed he possessed unique abilities that Spider-Man doesn't possess.
