Ari Aster's movies explore the horrors of interpersonal drama. His latest entry, Beau Is Afraid, is no different. The titular character, Beau (portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix), is a troubled, anxiety-ridden man with a dysfunctional relationship with his mother, Mona. In what Aster calls a "Jewish Lord of the Rings," Beau Is Afraid is a nightmarish voyage back home so Beau can attend his mother's funeral in time.
