Studio Ghibli has released a new trailer for its upcoming film The Boy and the Heron, giving fans a better idea of what to expect from Hayao Miyazaki's rumored final full-length feature film.

The Boy and the Heron's first official teaser trailer shows us glimpses of the mysterious story, featuring a boy named Mahito, who is "yearning for his mother," as noted in the video's description on YouTube. He finds himself entering a world that is inhabited by both the living and the dead. As with Miyazaki's previous works, the teaser indicates that recurring themes including love, friendship, death, and war will all be present in the film.

In addition to a first look at arguably the most secretive film of this year, Studio Ghibli also confirmed that it will hit theaters and IMAX in North Dec. 8. The film was originally released in Japan last July.

In 2020, Studio Ghibli announced that Miyazaki was coming out of retirement to make one more film. The studio, however, has been cautious to share very little information since. Prior to Studio Ghibli releasing today's teaser trailer and release date, we got a poster for the film and, more recently, some image stills, one of which included a heron with some gnarly-looking teeth.

Studio Ghibli also released a logline, which reads, "A young boy names Mahito longing for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. There, death comes to an end, and life finds a new beginning. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki."
