The latest in a number of recent Christopher Nolan re-releases, Insterstellar will be headed back to theaters for its 10th anniversary this fall.
And, as an added bonus, it'll be showing in 70MM IMAX prints - Nolan's preferred format - as well as digital screens, Paramount Pictures announced at its CinemaCon presentation today. The re-release will begin on September 27, 2024.
Interstellar is only the latest film of Nolan's to head back into theaters. Tenet re-released for just a week in February, while Regal Cinemas recently announced a promotion where they'll be showing The Dark Knight, Inception, Insomnia, Dunkirk, and Interstellar for $5 each this month.
The re-releases are no doubt capitalizing the massive success of Nolan's most recent film, Oppenheimer, which grossed a whopping $968 million worldwide last year, with much of that coming from IMAX showings. The film, starring Cillian Murphy as the eponymous physicist, cleaned up at the Oscars as well, winning seven Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director for Nolan, Best Actor for Murphy, and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.
Sci-fi epic Interstellar originally came out in 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey as an ex-NASA pilot on the hunt to find a new planet for humans after Earth becomes uninhabitable, with Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, Michael Caine, and Matt Damon also in the cast. That movie was nominated for a number of Oscars as well, and grossed an impressive $733 million at the worldwide box office.
On its initial release, IGN gave Interstellar an 8/10, calling it a "flawed, ambitious, gorgeous film that has the potential to either emotionally gob smack or befuddle."
