The Outer Worlds was a delightful surprise back in 2019, and it felt like Obsidian Entertainment playing to their strengths. The player woke up from cryo-storage in a hyper-capitalist region to space, and was given total control to sneak, fight, talk, and plot their way through intrigue on several planets with a cast of companions. Obsidian revealed a sequel to the game back in 2021, but the trailer didn’t reveal much besides some familiar visuals and a snarky voice over. At The Game Awards 2024, Obsidian showed off more of what we can expect from The Outer Worlds 2.
The trailer is also fairly cheeky, promising “everything that should have been in the first game: more action, more weapons, and more… graphics?” The trailer also shows off some great gunplay, with weapons that freeze enemies and let you smash them into chunks, or quickfire orbs of lightning, or launch orbs that incinerate everything in their path. For sickos like me, there’s still the option to sneak through a facility and stab everyone with a shank.
We also got a good look at some of the environments and corporations players will experience throughout the game. This includes big cities, worlds covered in gnarled vines, a frosty facility on an ice-encrusted world, and some very pretty pink trees.
The Outer Worlds 2 is due for a 2025 release, with Obsidian ending the trailer with a message to “stay tuned.” While Obsidian is a Microsoft studio, the game will be available on both Xbox and PlayStation on launch along with the PC.
