It’s official: Good Omens is back for a third season… but it’ll be its last.
The popular show, based on the original novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, has been renewed for Season 3, but it looks as though this will wrap up Aziraphale and Crowley’s story once and for all.
“I’m so happy finally to be able to finish the story Terry and I plotted in 1989 and in 2006,” said Gaiman in an statement. “Terry was determined that if we made Good Omens for television, we could take the story all the way to the end.”
Good Omens tells the story of an angel, Aziraphale (played by Michael Sheen), and a demon, Crowley (played by David Tennant) who strike up an unexpected friendship. Their attention soon turns towards the end of the world as an impending Armageddon must be stopped at all costs. It turns out that the Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch prove to be far more accurate than anyone was bargaining on.
“Season One was all about averting Armageddon, dangerous prophecies, and the End of the World,” said Gaiman. “Season Two was sweet and gentle, although it may have ended less joyfully than a certain Angel and Demon might have hoped. Now in Season Three, we will deal once more with the end of the world. The plans for Armageddon are going wrong. Only Crowley and Aziraphale working together can hope to put it right. And they aren’t talking.”
Season 2 ended with Aziraphale and Crowley pushed further apart than ever before. Now, it looks as though they’ll have to reconcile their demonic/angelic differences if the human race stands much of a chance.
“Good Omens has checked every box for a clever, witty, and funny comedy that not only made it a success on Prime Video but also made ‘goodness’ watchable and fun thanks to Neil and Terry’s immense creativity,” said Amazon MGM Studios head of television Vernon Sanders. “The final season is sure to be packed with the same dynamic energy that our global customers have come to enjoy.”
IGN’s Good Omens Season 2 review gave it 7/10 and said: “Neil Gaiman's Good Omens on Amazon is a charming miniseries with stellar performances from David Tennant and Michael Sheen. Backed by an excellent supporting cast and strong directing, Good Omens is indeed a great show that could have been amazing if its main storyline and some of its outlying characters had a few more episodes to stretch their wings.”
