The original Mobile Suit Gundam anime blew the lid of the mecha genre within anime. Creating the "Real Robot" subgenre, it eschewed the more unrealistic and cartoonish elements of previous works for a more military-based story. This was reflected in the mechs themselves, and while they weren't as over the top as some other giant robots, they were still every bit as cool.
