Legendary Star Wars parody film Spaceballs is reportedly getting a sequel from Amazon MGM Studios, Josh Gad, and original creator Mel Brooks.
As first reported by TheInSneider (and later corroborated by The Hollywood Reporter and various other trades), Gad, who is best known as the voice of Olaf in Frozen and LeFou in the live-action Beauty and the Beast movie, is currently attached to star while also serving as a producer with Brooks. The Spaceballs 2 script is being handled by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez, with Strays and Becoming Bond’s Josh Greenbaum set to direct. No story details have been revealed.
Kevin Salter will also serve as an executive producer. Samit and Hernandez are best known for penning scripts for projects like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Pokémon: Detective Pikachu, but we’ve known that they’ve been working with Gad for a few weeks. In an Instagram post shared on June 7, the Frozen star teased a new project that many had already predicted to be related to Spaceballs 2.
“Just handed in a film script that I think may be the funniest and best thing I’ve ever worked on and I am so freaking excited,” Gad said. “Working with my boys @cubanmissiledh and @benjisamit has been heaven on Earth and many other planets as well. Love you boys!”
Brooks, 97, paved the way for parody filmmaking with a number of comedic movies throughout the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s. His run of classics includes films like Young Frankenstein, History of the World, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and, in 1987, Spaceballs. The sci-fi comedy has become beloved in the decades since its release and starred John Candy, Rick Moranis, Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, Joan Rivers, and even Brooks himself.
No release date for Spaceballs 2 has been revealed, but with considering the sequel now has decades of new space movies to pull from, there’s no telling which direction it will take. We gave the original movie a 7/10 in our review.
