The writer of the 2000 X-Men movie has revealed the simple process that went into making Magneto’s helmet magic.

Unlike in the comics upon which they are based, the X-Men movies give Magneto’s famous helmet a special power that blocks Professor X from poking around in his mind. Fans of the early X-Men movies will be familiar with Ian McKellen's Magneto using the helmet to block Patrick Stewart’s Professor X from using his telepathic powers.

According to a tweet from David Hayter, who alongside being the voice of Solid Snake from Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid games wrote the film X-Men and co-wrote X2, Magneto’s helmet was a result of simple logistics.

“This happened because the director said one day, ‘Why couldn’t Xavier just make Magneto go to sleep or something?’

“No one had an answer.

“So we decided it was the helmet.”

Hayter’s comment came in response to a tweet from a user who said: “I still lie awake at night thinking about how Magneto’s helmet blocking telepathy just straight up wasn’t a thing at all until the movies. Like how the f**k is that real what.”

Soon after X-Men the movie came out, the comics adopted Magneto’s telepathy-proof helmet in a case of a movie based on a comic influencing the comic upon which it was based. And let’s not forget the much-loved X-Men animated series from the 90s gave Juggernaut’s helmet similar telepathy-blocking powers.

The X-Men are set to hit the MCU in a big way, with a number of teases and cameos setting up the famous mutant team’s proper introduction. Hugh Jackman is set to reprise his role as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. Perhaps Magneto will pop up in the MCU at some point. The question is, will it be with a magic helmet?
