Part of what makes The Lord of the Rings so renowned is its characters. Each one of them has a depth that spans ages. Quite literally so for many of them. A good portion of the best-known Tolkien characters are easily several centuries old if not thousands of years. In some rare cases, they are as old as time itself, having been around long enough to witness the creation of the world that would one day become Middle-Earth.
