Paramount+ is about to get a little more expensive, as Paramount Global announced today that it will raise the prices for some of its subscription plans.
As reported by Variety, beginning August 20, Paramount+ will increase the price of its ad-supported Essential plan from $5.99 to $7.99 per month—a $2 increase. The ad-free tier, aka the Paramount+ With Showtime plan, will increase by $1, bringing the price from $11.99 per month to $12.99 per month. Those with the legacy Paramount+ Limited Commercial plan will see a $1 price increase, bringing the monthly fee to $7.99.
Variety notes that are existing Paramount+ With Showtime subscribers will not see the new pricing until their next billing date "on or around September 20." More interestingly, existing subscribers of Paramount+ Essential will continue to receive the current price of $5.99, but Variety did not specify if or when the newer pricing would go into effect.
Annual pricing will remain unchanged, with Paramount+ Essential costing $59.99 a year and $119.99 per year for Paramount+ With Showtime yearly subscribers.
Paramount's increase in the prices of Paramount+ comes a little over a year after the streaming service saw a price hike. Paramount+ joins Peacock and Max as these streaming giants have increased the prices of its subscription plans this year. The announcement comes weeks after Paramount's rumored merger with Skydance Media fell apart.
Paramount+ is home to a wide range of movies and TV shows, such as Spongebob Squarepants, Star Trek, the Halo TV series, South Park specials, the Sonic the Hedgehog films, Yellowjackets, and the Yellowstone prequel shows 1883 and 1923.
In our 2023 review of Paramount+, IGN wrote: "While it's definitely still growing, Paramount+ is carving out a space for itself in the streaming landscape."
