Prime Video has released brand-new photos from its upcoming adaptation of the Fallout, revealing for the first time how the upcoming show will bring Bethesda's Wasteland to life.

Fallout fans will quickly recognize many of the pulls from the images, from the show of Lucy (Ella Purnell) gazing over a shattered landscape to shots of Ghouls, Vertibirds, and of course, the Brotherhood of Steel. Check out all the images in the slideshow below.

The images appear to be pulled from the teaser shown behind closed doors at gamescom 2023's Starfield presentation. While we were able to share our initial impressions after seeing them, this is the first time these images have been released to the public.

The captions offer a bit of insight into the show's world, with Purnell and Kyle MacLachan seen in the familiar vault dweller jumpsuit, and Walter Goggins depicted as a Cowboy Ghoul. Another shows Aaron Moten, who plays the character Maximus in the show, posing alongside a Brotherhood of Steel Power Suit.

Here's the official summary:

Based on one of the greatest video game series of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the irradiated hellscape their ancestors left behind — and are shocked to discover an incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them.

Info about the series has generally been limited, save that it will tell a fresh story within the Fallout universe. Director and executive producer Todd Howard has said that he wasn't interested in turning Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 into a movie or TV series, but when he got the chance to share a new story, he quickly got on board.

"It's not retelling a game story. It's basically an area of the map. Let's tell a story here that fits in the world that we have built, doesn't break any of the rules, can reference things in the games, but isn't a retelling of the games," Howard said in an interview last year. "[It] exists in the same world but is its own unique thing, so it adds to it. While also, people who haven't played the games, who can't experience how crazy cool Fallout is, can watch the series."

Even if it's a new story, though, it's apparent that Prime Video's Fallout will feature many of the essential elements of the games, with MacLachan's Overseer Hank character suggesting that it will open in Vault 33 — a familiar plot beat in the series. The presence of Ghouls and the Brotherhood of Steel also serve to lend it a recognizable texture. The official character descriptions offer still more insight:

Ella Purnell plays “Lucy.” Lucy is an optimistic Vault Dweller with an all-American can-do spirit. Her peaceful and idealistic nature is tested when people harm her loved ones.
Aaron Moten plays “Maximus.” A young soldier hides his tragic past as he serves in a militaristic faction called Brotherhood of Steel. He believes in the nobility of the Brotherhood's mission to bring law and order to the Wasteland--and will do anything to further their goals.
Walton Goggins plays “The Ghoul.” The Ghoul survives the wasteland as a Bounty Hunter. He is pragmatic, ruthless, and hides a mysterious past.
Kyle MacLachlan plays “Overseer Hank.” Hank is the Overseer of Vault 33 and Lucy’s father. He is eager to change the world for the better.

One way or another, Prime Video's adaptation will attempt to capture the essence of Bethesda's immensely popular series of RPGs, which it acquired from Interplay in the mid-2000s. Fallout has grown into one of Bethesda's crown jewels alongside Skyrim, with Fallout 5 confirmed to be in the pipeline following Elder Scrolls VI. Bethesda was acquired by Xbox along with the Fallout IP in 2021.

We won't be seeing Fallout 5 for quite a while, so this may be our best chance to see a new Fallout story for a while. Fallout is slated to release April 12, 2024 on Prime Video.
