Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy featured a cavalcade of terrifying creatures, ranging from the screeching, faceless Nazgûl to the bloodthirsty spider, Shelob. Over time, the mainstream media has grown increasingly violent, so modern audiences have become desensitized too much which was once frightening and shocking. However, the monsters of Middle-earth have remained scary over the past two decades without even breaking a PG-13 rating. The aura of fear created by these monsters kept the audience invested in the story, as they could relate to the petrified heroes.
