Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods was a groundbreaking movie for the Dragon Ball franchise. Toei Animation hadn't pushed the brand forward so significantly in ages. In 2013, it had been over 15 years since Dragon Ball GT ended. Dragon Ball was kept alive through video games that did little more than retell old stories. Even Dragon Ball Z Kai was only a modestly updated version of the original series. Battle of Gods, conversely, added new characters, raised the power ceiling, and expanded the lore in ways fans could only dream of. This movie paved the way for Resurrection 'F,' Dragon Ball Super, and more. However, Battle of Gods only became a pioneer for the franchise retroactively.
