The Apothecary Diaries is set in China in an indefinite ancient past. MaoMao, the daughter of a skilled apothecary, is on her way to collect ingredients for her father when she is kidnapped by bandits and sold to work as a servant at the Imperial Palace. Like every other fairytale, the story starts with the heroine hitting rock bottom — where the redemption starts. The Apothecary Diaries, the fall anime series produced by TOHO and OLM which began airing on October 22, features MaoMao, a reluctant social climber whose sharp brain, divine medical skills, and odd character propel her from servant to handmaid and healer in the blink of an eye.
