Lenovo is invested in the long game for the emerging submarket of portable gaming PCs, as one of the company's employees revealed today that it is working on a successor to its first handheld PC, the Legion Go.

During a roundtable interview at the 2024 Lenovo Innovate conference (uploaded by YouTuber Chris Stead), Clifford Chong, who serves as the Asian Pacific Gaming Category Manager at Lenovo, confirmed that a follow-up to the Legion Go is planned.

Though Chong did not dive deep into the specifics, such as what a Legion Go 2 would add or improve from its predecessor, he did elaborate that its release is not coming anytime soon. He did, however, point out that it's a product category the company is planning to invest in.

"We are still spending a lot of resources improving on the current Legion Go over the span of the last six months since launch. We have unlocked, from day one until now, a lot more experiences, and there are still engineering efforts to try and bring the next wave of features to the product," Chong explained. "Definitely, it's a product category that we do see potential in, and we continue to invest; we are looking towards when the time comes right, of course, having the next generation to provide even more features."

What sets Lenovo's products apart from the competition, such as the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally, is the Legion Go's unique design. With its detachable controllers and kickstand, it offers a level of versatility in gaming on the go that's reminiscent of Nintendo's hybrid gaming system, the Switch.

Lenovo is not the only one continuing to invest in handheld gaming PCs. Its competition, including Valve, Asus, and MSI, have all announced plans to make future iterations of their handheld gaming PCs, planning improvements from a bump in specs to things like battery performance and display.

And, of course, each of these companies have room to improve in their current handheld PC offerings. In the case of the Lenovo Legion Go, as our sister site PCMag pointed out in its review, it was "an impressive first crack" at this emerging submarket of PCs. Still, its weight and buggy software kept it from being the best in the market.
