Open-world RPGs have become fully baked into mainstream gaming over the years, and even after Cyberpunk 2077—mostly—patched into what it was meant to be, CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is still a benchmark for the genre. However, credit should be given where credit is due, as other superb titles within the subgenre have been released and elevated game design open-world RPGs, like FromSoftware's recent Elden Ring.
