The modding team behind Skyrim Together has announced it is canceling work on a Starfield multiplayer mode.
As reported by VG247, a modder revealed on the Skyrim Together Discord server that the modding team planned to create a similar mod for Starfield but the project has since been shelved. Skyrim Together was released in 2022 as a mod that brought multiplayer to the beloved Bethesda game and soon surpassed 80,000 downloads.
The reason given for giving up on Starfield Together was due to the team's lack of interest in Starfield. They complained about the quality of the game and said they had no reason to continue creating the mod as a result.
"The game is boring, bland, and the main draw of Bethesda games, exploration in a lively and handcrafted world, was completely gone," the modder wrote. "I'm not gonna put my heart and soul into a mod for a game as mediocre as this."
While the Skyrim Together modding team has given up on the project, the modder said they plan to make the code for the mod open source in case someone wants to finish the mod themselves.
Starfield was released a few months back and quickly became a big hit for Bethesda. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, Starfield has become the biggest launch in Bethesda history, surpassing 10 million players just three weeks after its release.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer later said there are over 12 million players as of early December 2023, and that "it still sits in our top 10 most-played games from Xbox Studios."
In our 7/10 review of Starfield, IGN said: "Starfield has a lot of forces working against it, but eventually the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist."
