Dragon Ball is easily one of the most successful and influential anime series of all time. It has remained a centerpiece for shonen anime since it first came out in 1986 and has only gained in popularity since then. Dragon Ball created a game-winning formula that has come to define the shonen battle genre — to the point that every shonen series that came after it has automatically been influenced by it, whether directly or by association. However, that same game-changing formula it created and reinvented with Dragon Ball Z has gone largely unchanged with its most recent series, Dragon Ball Super.
