Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has reached such exaggerated heights that it’s sometimes easy to forget that the franchise started in a fairly grounded place that emphasized realistic martial arts over radical transformations and energy attacks. There was definitely a point in Dragon Ball where humans could hold their own with Goku or any of the series’ strongest characters. However, a growing interest in Super Saiyans has increasingly made human heroes not only rare, but irrelevant.
