IDW's Cooking with Monsters by writer Jordan Alsaqa, artist Vivian Truong, and letterers Amauri Osoria & Nathan Widick is a love letter to YA-anime and Saturday morning cartoons. While it's a fun experience, the premise ends up suffering from a lack of pure originality in its execution. The story follows best friends Hana and Bobby as they attend an elite school to become warrior chefs, dealing with monsters and their own issues. Cooking with Monsters delivers a fun world to play in and a large cast of charming characters who face classic "coming of age" struggles along with hordes of food-themed creatures. While Alsaqa's and Truong's craft is more than accomplished enough to warrant attention -- especially for fans of the genre -- it can be a bit of a mixed bag.
