In a recent interview with Polygon, Robert Kirkman, the creator of comics like Invincible and The Walking Dead, discussed his ideal plans for future seasons of Amazon Prime's animated Invincible series, saying about seven-eight seasons could be "enough" to adapt the entire comic.
But Kirkman followed up by saying he's "trying not to pin it down to a number," calling it, "a moving target." After all, Invincible's first season largely covered events in the comic up through around issue 13, but it also included smaller moments and elements from points much further into the comic.
"I think in the seven-to-eight-season range seems like it would be enough," he told Polygon. "But there could be some things we move through a little faster, some things we expand. If we’re fortunate enough to go for a good long time, I think that would be enough to cover the entire comic. And there are some things along the way that didn’t get into the comic that I’d like to do. I think it’d be cool to have some episodes here and there that are completely original. So that’s part of the plan moving forward."
To Kirkman's point, we saw this approach in the first season of Invincible, where some elements from the comic were changed, moved around, or expanded to better fit TV as a medium.
But even with those smaller pacing and plot changes, he thinks that ballpark would be a good framework to adapt all 144 issues of Invincible. But, as far as we know, Prime Video has only greenlit the series for Seasons 2 and 3 at of yet.
Invincible Season 1 Part 1 is set to debut on Prime Video with four episodes on Nov. 3, with the second part slated to release sometime in early 2024. If you're interested in hearing more from Robert Kirkman, IGN's own Alex Stedman recently sat down with him and discussed the show's upcoming season, working on it during the pandemic, and the mysterious live-action Invincible movie.
