Like most Marvel movie trailers, the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer includes a wealth of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it comic book and movie references and big reveals that will have diehard fans deciphering and theory-crafting until the next trailer comes out. One of the Easter eggs in the nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer, however, was made entirely by accident.

As noted, the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer is chock-full of surprises and Easter eggs, chief among them being a cheeky nod to creator Rob Liefeld and brief glimpses at villains like Lady Deathstrike and Azazel. However, one of the weirdest Easter eggs in the swear-filled trailer isn't about the superhero happenings on screen but the iconic song accompanying it. Turns out the official trailer release date for Deadpool & Wolverine coincides with its accompanying song’s historic reign at the top of the Billboard Top 100 charts.

Interplaying among Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynold’s skirmish as Wolverine and Deadpool is Madonna’s hit song, Like A Prayer. According to the '80s-centric X/Twitter account Old School 80s, today's date also marks the start of the pop album’s six-week run at the top of the Billboard album chart as well as the single’s three-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts 35 years ago.

While it would be easy to chalk up the trailer’s song choice to yet another well-planned marketing stunt on Marvel’s part — possibly tying to Deadpool dubbing himself “Marvel Jesus” in Deadpool & Wolverine’s first trailer — Reynolds, in no uncertain terms, says bizarre musical coincidence was entirely unplanned.

“I swear to Marvel Jesus, we did not plan this!” Reynolds tweeted.

Bizarre coincindences aside, Marvel fans quickly flooded Reynold's replies predicting Like a Prayer skyrocketing to the top of the Billboard charts once again, just like Celine Dion's Ashes did with 2018's Deadpool 2. Time will tell if fans' predictions come true.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26, 2024. Be sure to check out our reaction to Deadpool & Wolverine’s nine-minute Cinemacon footage where Deadpool tells Fox to “suck it" as well as our roundup of fan theories from today's trailer.
