What If…? tops a triumphant Season 2 with a treat for longtime Marvel Comics fans. Episode 8, "What If… The Avengers Assembled in 1602?" is a surprisingly effective adaptation of 2003's Marvel 1602 (by Neil Gaiman, Andy Kubert, Richard Isanove, and Todd Klein), which reimagines the Silver Age genesis of Marvel Comics in the waning days of Queen Elizabeth I. Despite the necessary changes of adapting the story to a 30-minute format -- as well as more specific tweaks to match it up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe -- it effectively conveys the essence of a much larger comics' story, as well as introducing newer fans to its singular take on well-known heroes.
