When Marvel Studios brought Ant-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it introduced two of them. Paul Rudd's Scott Lang suited up as the miniscule hero, while Michael Douglas played Hank Pym, one of the comics' original heroes. A founding member of the Avengers, his hero days were done by the time Ant-Man debuted. The second episode of What If…? Season 2 is set in 1988, when Hank Pym was in his prime. It's also the most heroic the character has been. In the Ant-Man films, Hank Pym was bitter about his time as the hero, especially having lost his wife to the Quantum Realm on a mission. He's done heroic things in the films, sure. But he's always had a deeply personal motivation to do so.
