Who doesn't have fond memories of spending Saturday mornings gorging on sugary breakfast cereal and cartoons? Cereal mascots like Count Chocula have become indelible pieces of pop culture, and now they're the inspiration behind a new horror comedy graphic novel called Cereal.

With the Cereal Vol. 1: Sweet Darkness trade paperback hitting stores on October 12, IGN can exclusively debut a new preview of this kooky satire from Ahoy Comics. Check it out in the slideshow gallery below:

With such a wacky premise, it should come as little surprise that Cereal is the brainchild of The Flintstones and Second Coming writer Mark Russell. This graphic novel pairs Russell with artist Peter Snejberg (BPRD: Hell on Earth).

Cereal was originally published as a series of short stories in the various Edgar Allan Poe's Snifter of... anthology books. This trade paperback collects all of those stories, as well as three new tales totaling 42 pages of new content. Here's the official description for Cereal:

The Marquis de Cocoa, recently transformed into a vampire, emerges from his castle's crypt to face a deadly ordeal: He must brave the agony of sunrise and host another of the sumptuous breakfast parties he is known for, lest the townsfolk suspect what he has become and drive a stake through his heart. Other abominations—a creature composed of cadaver parts, a specter, a lycanthrope, a leprechaun—arise to threaten dangers of their own in this epic comedy of terror and tragedy.

"Monsters play such an expansive role in our collective conscience, being used for everything from giving face to our deepest fears to selling us breakfast cereal,” said Russell in a press release. “This book looks at monsters from every angle at once. It sees them as we are — as cartoonish but scary, as comical, and yet, still sad."
