Shōgun Season 2 will hopefully enter production sometime in early 2025, according to FX CEO John Landgraf.

The network head spoke about a follow-up for its beloved samurai show during an interview with Variety. Hot off the heels of an army of Emmy nominations for projects like Shōgun and The Bear, he promised that the team behind the series, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, were already hard at work. Landgraf explains that he called to congratulate the duo on the show’s long list of nominations – which includes Drama Series, Writing for a Drama Series, Directing for a Drama Series, and more – and that they had just stepped out of the writers' room.

“We’re hoping to be in production relatively early next year,” he said when asked about the Shōgun Season 2 timeline. “But it’s a long production period. I think between principal and second unit days of photography, that show shot between 180 and 190 days or more, could have been close to 200.”

It means Shōgun Season 2 won’t arrive for quite some time, but FX is at least moving to pick up where the story left off as quickly as it can. We’ll likely know more about how the show will continue as its hopeful early 2025 production start date inches closer.

Most viewers expected Shōgun to come to an end following Season 1’s conclusion due to the fact that it had initially been promised as a limited series and also managed to completely cover the events of the novel it’s based on. FX was adamant that it wanted more, however, moving to renew the show for not just one but potentially two seasons in May.

We loved Shōgun Season 1 enough to give it a 10/10 in our review. We praised its immersive world and character arcs, saying, “FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s Shōgun places characters over combat for a complex and beautiful tale of intrigue set in feudal Japan.”
