The prolific actress Margot Robbie, who is known for a slew of iconic roles such as the DC Comics character Harley Quinn, recently revealed that she wants to pass the role on to other actresses.
During an interview with Variety, Robbie was asked about her thoughts on Lady Gaga playing the character in Todd Phillips' upcoming film Joker: Folie à Deux. Robbie explained that she "always wanted" other actresses to play Harley Quinn and see what someone else's interpretation brings to the character.
"I always wanted Harley to be a character that would get passed on to other actresses to play, the way there are so many iconic male characters," Robbie told Variety. "Harley's so fun and can go in so many different directions. You put her in someone else's hands, and it's like, 'What are they going to do with her?' The options are endless."
Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn in three live-action movies: Suicide Squad, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad. Robbie's comments and appreciation for different interpretations and directions of the character echo comparisons of iconic male characters getting multiple portrayals on film and/or TV.
A good example of a character getting multiple portrayals includes Bruce Wayne/Batman, who in recent years was portrayed by Robert Pattinson in Matt Reeves' 2022 film The Batman. Yet in last year's DC film The Flash, Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, and George Clooney appeared as variations of the character. And WB has yet to announce who will play the caped crusader in the upcoming film Batman: The Brave and the Bold.
