The latest pair of mainline Pokémon games—Scarlet and Violet—had a solid gameplay core, but its optimization problems frustratingly held it back. Legends: Arceus, however, shows that Game Freak already has a solid new foundation to work with. The game was a breath of fresh air when it launched in early 2022 for the Nintendo Switch, as it genuinely took the mainline series in exciting new directions compared to the aggressively safe Sword and Shield.
