The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials showcase the range of the classic sci-fi series. Special One, The Star Beast, is at once a loving conversation about gender and a lore-soaked battle to save Earth from a weird little goblin. Special Three, The Giggle, re-examines the Doctor and a villain from his distant past in a battle that begins with the invention of the television. Special Two, Wild Blue Yonder, however, is a bit different. The first and last specials take a hard look at the show's themes of acceptance in the modern world, but Wild Blue Yonder is set on an almost-abandoned spaceship at the Edge of Creation. The Doctor and Donna are entirely alone apart from the monsters who emerge to mess with their heads. They call themselves not-things and have a hard time replicating their targets' arms despite their uncanny ability to invade their minds and absorb memories. Many of Doctor Who's best episodes draw heavily on horror elements, but most mystical monsters amount to little more than tricky aliens with bad intentions and powerful abilities or technology.
