If you’ve already seen Barbie, well, you’ve joined a large list of people who’ve made it the second-highest-grossing movie of 2023 so far. But if you haven’t – or just want to rewatch it in a bigger format – we’ve got some good news.
Warner Bros. announced today that Barbie will get a one-week-only run on IMAX screens throughout North America and select international markets starting on Sept. 22. The limited engagement will also include new post-credits footage selected by director Greta Gerwig.
It’s little surprise Warner Bros. wants to keep cashing in on the financial phenomenon that is Barbie – especially as some of its other big films, like The Flash, have been far less successful. Barbie shattered records with its release on July 21 alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (which, of course, spawned the Barbenheimer meme that ended up benefiting both films) and has only continued to collect more money.
As Warner Bros. notes in today’s release, Barbie has grossed just about $1.3 billion at the box office over the past month – meaning there’s a good chance it’ll catch up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing movie of the year, at least so far. The Super Mario Bros. Movie ended its run earlier this year with a staggering $1.36 billion, according to Box Office Mojo.
Is this IMAX run one last push to ensure Barbie’s spot at the top of the year’s charts? Maybe! Or it could also just be a reason to take advantage of the vacated IMAX screens that have been occupied by Oppenheimer, Blue Beetle, and Gran Turismo as of late.
