The 1993 Disney box office flop Hocus Pocus has gained traction over the years since its release and subsequent status as a Halloween favorite among cult classic fans. Noted as a relatively darker film for Disney at the time, the plot revolves around three witch sisters who were hanged in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1693 after it was discovered they were sucking the youth from the children of the village. The sisters vowed they'd be back "On All Hallows' Eve when the moon is round" to claim all the lives of the children in Salem. Fast-forward to 1993 when the black flame candle is lit by teenager Max Dennison in the present day; the sisters return, and hijinks ensue, involving another battle for Salem and its youth. Despite its current popularity, it was review bombed at the time of its release by high-profile critics like Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.
