In the 21st Century, Paramount Studios tried to repeat the 20th Century success of its oldest franchise, itself set in the 23rd and 24th Centuries. On television, or streaming at least, Star Trek is thriving with five series so far and more on the way. (At least, once the studios offer the WGA and SAG-AFTRA unions a fair deal and end the strikes.) Yet, despite three films that made more than any of the previous movies in box-office receipts, the universe created by Gene Roddenberry is faltering on the big screen. If Paramount is trying to repeat old successes, it has ignored the key element of connectivity in modern Star Trek movies at a time when audiences are primed for this kind of cinematic storytelling.
