Crunchyroll has announced it's increasing the price of the two most expensive tiers of its subscription service today, its first price hike since 2019.
Crunchyroll revealed the price increase, which will affect over 36 countries including the United States, in an email to subscribers and on its website on this morning. As noted, Crunchyroll’s price hike won’t affect the Fan tier — its lower-tiered $7 subscription option — but it will affect folks subscribed to higher-paid tiers.
Here’s a rundown of the price changes for each paid tier:
- Mega Fan tier will increase from $9.99/mo. to $11.99/mo
- Ultimate Fan tier will increase from $14.99/mo to $15.99/mo
“These changes, effectively today for new subscribers and with the June billing cycle for current subscribers, will allow us to acquire more diverse anime content, bring subscribers even more benefits and access, and re-invest more into the overall Japanese anime ecosystem,” Crunchyroll wrote in an email to subscribers. “This is the first price increase in five years, and we are committed to bringing fans more of what they love - more access to the best anime from Japan.”
In tandem with today’s subscription price increases, Crunchyroll also announced it has reduced the free trial period from 14 days to seven. The price increase comes as various other streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+/Hulu have also gradually become more expensive.
Today’s news follows the anime streamer finalizing its $1.2 billion merger with Funimation in 2021. At the time, Crunchyroll caught the ire of disgruntled fans because the ensuing merger meant that subscribers would no longer have access to the anime shows and films they purchased under Funimation after joining their accounts. Crunchyroll’s price change also comes a month after the launch of its long-awaited Multiple Profiles feature.
Correction: A previous version of this article asserted that Multiple Profiles is only available for two subscription tiers. It is available for all membership tiers.
