The new trailer for the upcoming indie sci-fi film Divinity – which can be seen exclusively here on IGN via the player above or the embed below – showcases what promises to be a uniquely trippy theatrical experience. (And potentially seizure-triggering, too, as the film’s Sundance Film Festival premiere came with a warning due to its strobe effects.)
Divinity is a film by writer-director-producer Eddie Alcazar and executive produced by Steven Soderbergh. Set in an otherworldly human existence on a barren planet, the film stars Scott Bakula as scientist Sterling Pierce and Stephen Dorff as his son, Jaxxon Pierce.
According to the official synopsis, Sterling dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly creating the building blocks of a groundbreaking serum named “Divinity,” a drug now controlled and manufactured by his mogul son. Jaxxon is abducted by a pair of mysterious brothers (Moises Arias and Jason Genao), with help from the seductive Nikita (Karrueche Tran).
“It’s about life, death, and rebirth - those are the main themes that surround it,” Alcazar explained in the film’s press notes. “(The drug Divinity) enables people to become pretty much immortal, at least physically immortal. But it’s a work in progress, the mind aspect hasn’t been fully figured out. So minds are deteriorating the same as normal, but everyone is physically in their prime. Another side-effect is that you can’t reproduce when you’re taking the chemical, so people taking it must choose… either to live forever or give life.”
In addition to the aforementioned Dorff and Bakula, Divinity’s cast also includes Mike O’Hearn, Emily Willis, and Bella Thorne. DJ Muggs is one of the film’s composers, along with Dean Hurley.
Utopia and Sumerian present Divinity, which opens in theaters on October 13.
