It's been 30 years since Star Trek: Deep Space Nine debuted in syndication, expanding Gene Roddenberry's universe for the first time without the Great Bird of the Galaxy, himself. His sudden death in 1991 meant the series had to earn its place in the Star Trek universe. The Season 6 episode "Far Beyond the Stars" proved it belonged in a big way. Yet, that episode's protagonist, Benny Russell, shares a connection with an unlikely character, holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine. Despite being set near the end of the 24th Century, Deep Space Nine included more than a few major references to the 20th Century.
