Suits is getting a spin-off and it sounds pretty faithful to the original show. During an interview with Content London (via Variety), Universal International Studios president Beatrice Springborn gave an update on the upcoming Suits spin-off.
“[It will] have the same energy and good-looking people that the original did,” she said, adding the spin-off is set “in the same timeframe” as the original show.
This time around, however, the action is moving from New York to Los Angeles. “We are working on it right now,” Springborn said, referring to the show as ‘Suits L.A.’. However, Variety noted that a source explained that ‘Suits L.A.’ is not the show’s official title. “It’s so fun and happy.”
According to Springborn, a returning series like Suits is an attractive prospect to streamers. “A lot of streamers are looking for ongoing series, things that feel easy to watch,” she said. “Our show Suits is incredibly huge on Netflix.”
Of course, she’s right – Suits recently broke all-time streaming records thanks to its success on Netflix, becoming the most-streamed show for 12 weeks running.
“It is amazing-looking people in great clothes but at the core of it you can’t have a show that’s successful with just that,” she added. “It has to have great storytelling and great character work. So how do you do something that can be ongoing, have a gloss to it, and be a continuing series that everyone wants?”
Apparently, the answer is to head to Los Angeles. This isn’t the first time a Suits spin-off has been floated, with original creator Aaron Korsh recently revealing that he had ideas for a prequel show focussing on a young Robert Zane, father of Meghan Markle’s character, Rachel Zane. Ultimately, Universal wasn’t interested.
Suits debuted in 2011 on USA Network and ran for nine seasons until 2019. The show stars Patrick J Adams as a legal genius without qualifications who talks his way into a New York law firm. Markle starred as Zane until Season 7, during which her character marries Mike Ross and moves to Seattle in the season finale.
