Throughout the 1980s in South Korea, several changes in governmental policy, such as the easing of censorship, the allowance of independent filmmaking, and an increase in the distribution of international imports, directly led to a cinematic renaissance in the late 1990s and 2000s. This movement, known as "New Korean Cinema," put South Korean movies on the map, bringing the country an unprecedented amount of critical acclaim and box office success.
