Netflix has announced that its series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Dead Boy Detectives comics will premiere globally on April 25, 2024.
The spring date will finally give fans a live-action show based on Edwin Payne (George Rexstrew) and Charles Rowland’s (Jayden Revri) ghostly mysteries. We got a first-look teaser trailer for the show's eight-episode season in November. Alongside today’s release date, the streamer offered an even better look at the leads thanks to a few new images that you can see below.
“Meet Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, ‘the brains’ and ‘the brawn’ behind the Dead Boy Detectives agency,” Netflix’s official synopsis says. “Teenagers born decades apart who find each other only in death, Edwin and Charles are best friends and ghosts… who solve mysteries. They will do anything to stick together – including escaping evil witches, Hell and Death herself. With the help of a clairvoyant named Crystal (Kassius Nelson) and her friend Niko (Yuyu Kitamura), they are able to crack some of the mortal realm’s most mystifying paranormal cases.”
Dead Boy Detectives’ ghostly stories will exist as part of Netflix’s Sandman Universe, which, of course, includes 2022’s The Sandman. Season 2 of the dark fantasy show has already been greenlit and, most recently, resumed production late last year.
The Sandman Universe is already off to a great start thanks to Sandman Season 1. In our 9/10 review, we said, “Netflix’s The Sandman brings Dream and his Endless siblings to life in a way Neil Gaiman and longtime fans could only conjure up in their deepest of sleeps.”
We can only hope Dead Boy Detectives follows The Sandman’s strong start. While we wait for its April premiere, be sure to check out Gaiman and George R.R. Martin’s thoughts on adaptations.
