When Batman started his war on crime, he wanted to become a symbol of hope for Gotham's citizens and a nightmare for its seedy underbelly. However, before Nightwing or Robin, Bruce's most faithful confidant was always his family butler, Alfred Pennyworth. After Thomas and Martha Wayne died in Gotham's Crime Alley, Alfred raised Bruce alone in a mansion haunted by memories. When Bruce Wayne decided to become a costumed hero, Alfred supported him even if it meant becoming complicit in his dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle.
