When Batman started his war on crime, he wanted to become a symbol of hope for Gotham's citizens and a nightmare for its seedy underbelly. Before he knew it, the Dark Knight had amassed a number of allies by his side and fans came to know them as the Bat-Family. However, before Nightwing or Robin, Bruce's most faithful confidant was always his family butler, Alfred Pennyworth. After Thomas and Martha Wayne died in Gotham's Crime Alley, Alfred raised Bruce alone in a mansion haunted by memories. When Bruce Wayne decided to become a costumed hero, Alfred supported him even if it meant becoming complicit in his dangerous and unhealthy lifestyle.
