Black Myth Wukong will release on Xbox Series X and S after PlayStation 5 and PC, developer Game Science has confirmed.

The announcement came after Black Myth Wukong's Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer ditched mention of the planned Xbox Series X and S version.

Game Science showed off a new trailer, below, for its epic fantasy adventure based on Journey to the West, with the logo for Xbox Series X and S now removed following previous trailers that did include Microsoft’s console.

Game Science announced an August 20, 2024 release date for Black Myth Wukong for PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC back at the Game Awards 2023. Its release was expected across those platforms up until today. Black Myth Wukong will now launch on PS5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store only on August 20.

In a FAQ, Game Science said it was still optimizing the Xbox version, and apologised to Xbox users.

"PC and PS5 users can enjoy the full game starting August 20, 2024," Game Science said in its statement. "We are currently optimizing the Xbox Series X|S version to meet our quality standards, so it won't release simultaneously with the other platforms. We apologize for the delay and aim to minimize the wait for Xbox users. We will announce the release date as soon as it meets our quality standards."

Game Science's unveiling of this trailer at Summer Game Fest follows IGN’s report compiling numerous sexist comments made by the studio's founders and other developers spanning the last decade.

As we reported, these comments have sparked a growing backlash among Chinese gamers, particularly women and their allies, who find them demeaning and alienating — though a large contingent of other gamers have leaped to Game Science's defense in response.

As a result, many of the videos, discussions, and communities growing around Black Myth Wukong have become spaces of ferocious debate between women demanding apology and accountability, and their detractors replying with sexism and cruelty.

IGN asked Game Science for comment for our article at the time, but the studio has not addressed any of these remarks to us or anywhere else at this time.
