The Atari 2600+ is now available for preorder for $129.99 (see it on Amazon). Anyone who lived through the early days of console gaming, or who’s interested in seeing what it was like, may want to take a look at this thing. It’s a slightly smaller re-creation of the original console, but unlike the original, it has an HDMI out, so it can connect to modern TVs.
It comes with 10 games on a cartridge, but additional games and controllers are also up for preorder. Even cooler: it’s backwards compatible with original Atari 2600 and 7800 games. Let’s have a look at what games and accessories are available for preorder now.
Preorder Atari 2600+ Console, Games, and Accessories
The console itself is a faithful recreation of the original hardware, though it’s a bit smaller than the somewhat chonky original. It also includes a CX40+ joystick that’s been fine-tuned to feel exactly like the original sticks. It also includes a 10-in-1 game cartridge (see the game list below), as well as an HDMI cable to connect it to your TV and a USB-C power cable.
The Atari 2600+ is backwards compatible with the vast majority of 2600 and 7800 games. You can find the full compatibility list here. The console also gives you the option of playing the games in their original aspect ratio, or in full-screen mode.
As for Mr. Run and Jump, it’s a brand-new game from Atari that, while it may be inspired by retro Atari 2600 games, it certainly could not be played on the original hardware. It’s a stylish, fast-moving 2D platformer, along the lines of N+. It’s also available on all the modern consoles.
Atari 2600+ 10-in-1 Cartridge Games List
Buy the new console, and you’ll get a game cartridge that holds these 10 games:
- Adventure
- Combat
- Dodge 'Em
- Haunted House
- Maze Craze
- Missile Command
- RealSports
- Volleyball
- Surround
- Video Pinball
- Yars' Revenge
CX30+ Paddle Bundle Games List
The CX40 joystick wasn’t the only way to interact with old-school Atari games. Some games worked better with CX30 paddle controllers. This bundle includes two CX30+ controllers, as well as a cartridge that includes the following games:
- Breakout
- Canyon Bomber
- Night Driver
- Video Olympics
All of these games use the two paddle controllers.
If you want even more, you can pick up Berzerk Enhanced Edition and an additional CX40+ joystick from the Atari Store. Those aren’t available on Amazon at the time of this writing.
