When it first premiered in 2016, Netflix's Stranger Things was a bit of an anomaly. In a sea of content mainly dominated by sequels, prequels, and spin-offs, Strange Things was, on its surface, a completely original IP. Despite its consistent odes to the pop culture of the 1980s, the series found its identity elsewhere as an electrically original tale full of lovable characters and a beating heart of horror. The series' expert blend of genres made it an instant hit and is no doubt responsible for its hold on modern-day audiences. But with the fifth and final season beginning filming and fast approaching, the future of the Stranger Things franchise is in a state of limbo. Netflix surely won't abandon the IP that has singlehandedly reignited public interest in the platform, but fans have been promised that Stranger Things itself will have a proper conclusion in Season 5.
